Built by hand, shaped by tradition, crafted to endure
Traditional and Restoration Boat Building
At Traditional Boat Building & Refitting, we specialise in traditional boat building in Southampton, creating bespoke vessels using time-honoured craftsmanship and proven techniques. Working across the South Coast, we build and restore boats with a strong focus on quality, durability, and attention to detail.
Whether you are commissioning a new build or require a traditionally constructed vessel, our approach ensures every project reflects both heritage and performance.
Blitzen
Blitzen is a racing yacht designed by Sparkman and Stephens in 1938. The vessel’s structure was compromised due to freshwater exposure and a protracted period of chartering, which was confirmed through a comprehensive survey revealing the extent of her deterioration. We meticulously disassembled the yacht, removing components carefully and securing her to the workshop floor to preserve her integrity during the structural repairs. The keel was removed for rework, and frame templates were created to facilitate the production of new oak laminated replacements. The project included the installation of a new stem, aft deadwoods, and stern posts, sourcing matching timber originally used whenever possible. The planking comprised two layers running fore and aft—American Yellow Cedar on the interior and African Mahogany on the exterior—bonded together for durability. A new teak deck was installed, complemented by bespoke bronze deck fittings, with the Brazilian Mahogany margins, king plank, and cap rails finished in multiple coats of varnish to highlight the unique beauty of these rare timbers. Every detail of the vessel was carefully considered. Consequently, she graced the cover of Classic Boat magazine and was shortlisted for the Restoration of the Year award.
